Do these guitar pedals serve the same purpose?

Having read the specs the MXR is just an amplifier, no more no less. The Boss pedal is an expander (opposite of a compressor). The pedal affects the dynamic range of the guitar output so quiet sounds go through quietly and loud sounds go through super loud.
