Southern people call a stocking cap a toboggan!?!?

Being from CO and moving to the south Ive noticed a lot of strange things, but this just bothers me to no end! Toboggan is a sled so by someone saying they are wearing a toboggan makes them sound foolish to me! Any idea how or why southerners started calling it a toboggan?
